What is Google Merchant Center and how to set it up
Google Merchant Center is the free platform where you upload your product catalogue (the feed) so it can appear in Google Shopping and online-store ads. It does not run campaigns on its own, it feeds the data behind every product shown, with image, price and availability. Without a correctly set up Merchant Center account, your products simply cannot appear in shopping results.
More than 90% of commercial searches in Romania start on Google, and for an online store the most valuable format is not the text ad but the product card with image and price. That card does not come from the campaign, it comes from Google Merchant Center. If you sell physical products and do not have a correctly configured Merchant Center account, you lose exactly the channel with the highest purchase intent.
What is Google Merchant Center
Google Merchant Center is Google's free platform where you upload and manage your store's product catalogue. It does not show ads and does not bid, it stores each product's data (title, price, stock, image, code) in a file called a feed, which Google uses to build Shopping ads.
Think engine and fuel. Google Ads is the engine that runs the campaign and bids. Merchant Center is the data tank each shown product is generated from. One without the other produces no sales.

Frequently asked questions
What is Google Merchant Center?
Google Merchant Center is Google's free platform where you upload and manage your online store's product catalogue. It does not run ads and does not bid, it stores each product's data (title, price, stock, image, code) in a feed that Google uses to build Shopping ads and the free listings in the Shopping tab. Without a correctly configured Merchant Center account, your products cannot appear in shopping results.
What's the difference between Google Merchant Center and Google Ads?
They are two different systems that work together. Google Merchant Center stores the product data, the feed, and decides which products are eligible to appear. Google Ads is the platform that runs the campaigns, bids and decides when and to whom products appear. Merchant Center is the fuel, Google Ads is the engine. You need both connected to run Shopping campaigns.
How much does Google Merchant Center cost?
Google Merchant Center is completely free. You pay nothing for the account, for uploading the feed, or for the free listings in the Shopping tab. You only pay when you run paid campaigns through Google Ads, and there the cost is per click, depending on category and competition. The account itself, no matter how large the catalogue, stays free.
How do I verify my site in Merchant Center?
Site verification proves you own the domain. It is done four ways: via Google Tag Manager, via an HTML file uploaded to the server, via a meta tag added to the site's code, or via Google Search Console if you already have the domain verified there. Without this step the account cannot publish products, so it is mandatory before any campaign.
Why are my products disapproved in Merchant Center?
The most common causes are: the feed price differs from the product page price, the site is missing a return policy or terms and conditions, images have promotional text or a watermark, branded products are missing a GTIN, or the site lacks HTTPS. A disapproved product does not appear in Shopping at all. When half the catalogue is disapproved, your Shopping channel effectively does not exist, even if you are paying for it.
At DAFE Digital we manage campaigns for you. Same budget, better profitability, no optimisations to handle yourself.
What works on an e-commerce account with €5,000/month doesn't translate directly to an account with €500. Your context, history and objectives matter. We manage Google Ads, Meta Ads and LinkedIn Ads with a focus on real profitability, not activity.
